As global trade increases, more financial institutions are entering the freight derivatives market and GFI provides an important brokerage service for them helping them to manage freight risk more efficiently and to gain exposure to this growing asset class. 

Wet Freight 

London – ACM/GFI
ACM/GFI is a joint venture between GFI and ACM Shipping - a London ship broker - offering hybrid voice and electronic trading of wet freight derivatives.

ACM/GFI aims to increase liquidity in wet freight derivative trading, enabling oil companies, ship owners and other users of shipping capacity to better manage volatile shipping costs.

ACM/GFI brokers wet freight Forward Freight Agreements. Shipping routes covered by these derivatives are:

  • TD5 130kmt WAFR to USAC
  • TD7 80kmt North Sea to Cont

ACM/GFI was set up in 2002.

New York – ACM/GFI and McQuilling
ACM/GFI and McQuilling Brokerage Partners, a specialist  in marine transportation of crude and petroleum products  run a joint a wet freight derivatives broking desk at McQuilling's offices in New York. This gives US-based shipping companies and charterers a single point of access for all their financing, chartering and hedging requirements.

Singapore
GFI runs a wet freight derivatives desk in Singapore, which works closely with GFI’s energy desks there, particularly bio-fuels. As the leading OTC freight swaps broker, and through its global network of offices, ACM/GFI is ideally placed to develop further the hedging of freight for bio fuels and associated products. Working closely with The Baltic Exchange and the market users we are committed to developing a liquid and active market in biofuel freight worldwide.

Dry Freight 

GFI’s dry freight desks work closely with other GFI commodities brokerage desks, in particular coal,  offering clients valuable insight into related markets. As a complement to its derivatives desk, GFI launched its own physical dry freight desk in London in 2006. This allows GFI to offer complete structured risk management solutions in dry freight.

GFI can broker contracts related any Baltic Exchange index – but liquidity is concentrated around a few Cape, Panamax and Supramax routes.
